Minimizing the Worst Slowdown: Offline, Online
نویسنده
چکیده
We look for protocols (service disciplines) setting an upper bound on the slowdown (expected sojourn time divided by job size) a job may face, irrespective of the processing times of other jobs. We call this worst slowdown the liability of a job. In a scheduling problem with identical release dates, allowing the server to randomize the order of service cuts almost in half the liability profiles feasible under deterministic protocols. The same is true if cash transfers are feasible and users have linear waiting costs. When release times are arbitrary, we characterize liability functions implementable by a deterministic online protocol, where the liability depends on the number of jobs in the queue upon release of the job. In an M/D/1 queue with a given arrival rate, the liability of a job is at least its slowdown when all other jobs are of the same size. We conjecture that this liability is feasible online, and identify a probabilistic protocol exceeding it by at most 130%.

Minimizing the worst slowdown: off-line and on-line
Minimizing the slowdown (expected sojourn time divided by job size) is a key concern of fairness in scheduling and queuing problems where job sizes are very heterogeneous. We look for protocols (service disciplines) capping the worst slowdown a job may face no matter how large (or small) the other jobs are. We call this worst slowdown the liability of the job in question. In the scheduling prob...
متن کاملDistributed Multi-Depot Routing without Communications
We consider and formulate a class of distributed multi-depot routing problems, where servers are to visit a set of requests, with the aim of minimizing the total distance travelled by all servers. These problems fall into two categories: distributed offline routing problems where all the requests that need to be visited are known from the start; distributed online routing problems where the req...
متن کاملExtra Buffer Resources Improving Competitiveness in Minimizing Energy Consumption
In this paper, we consider energy management algorithms for scheduling jobs in power-scare scenarios such as embedded computer systems and sensor networks. We focus on investigating the impact of buffer resources in minimizing the total energy cost in an online setting. The online algorithms do not have any assumptions on job arrivals; their worst-case performance is measured in term of competi...
متن کاملA Polyhedral Off-Line Robust MPC Strategy for Uncertain Polytopic Discrete-Time Systems
In this paper, an off-line synthesis approach to robust constrained model predictive control for uncertain polytopic discrete-time systems is presented. Most of the computational burdens are moved off-line by pre-computing a sequence of state feedback control laws that corresponds to a sequence of polyhedral invariant sets. The state feedback control laws computed are derived by minimizing the ...
متن کاملWorst Case Behavior of List Algorithms for Dynamic Scheduling of Non-unit Execution Time Tasks with Arbitrary Precedence Constrains
Performance properties of list scheduling algorithms under various dynamic assumptions are analyzed. The focus is on bounds for scheduling directed acyclic graphs with arbitrary precedence constrains and arbitrary task processing times subject to minimizing the makespan. New performance bounds are derived and compared with known results. key words: list scheduling, worst case analysis, on-line ...
